Age-Related Macular Degeneration

AMD is medically known as (Age- related macular degeneration). This is condition of eyes which affects the small retina part which acts as a filter for eyes, i.e known as the Macula. Macular ailments developed due to age may affect the central vision. Though, it does not affect the vision completely causing total sight loss. This condition does not cause itching or pain in eyes. It may affect the vision directly, especially during reading books, viewing images and watching TV or screens.

AMD may cause the central vision to distort and have blurry vision and, in span of time. This may develop blank patch around the vision centre.

Types of Age- related macular degeneration

AMD is primarily of 2 types, namely:

Dry AMD (It is a common type of AMD)

Wet AMD (It is rare and happens among 10-15% in people)

Its Causes

The exact cause for AMD is not known. Researchers have found following causes may be responsible for developing AMD:

Age Factor

Eating habit

As we are not aware about the actual reason behind AMD, we may get affected by this disease even if we don’t possess the risk factors.

Sign and Symptoms

The AMD Symptoms can vary from one person to another, but the first problem someone can observe is with the capability to view detail. Many people may find it difficult to read small texts, even with help of usual glasses. In such cases, slight smudging develops around the blurred area or in vision centre. Sometimes even the straight lines may appear hazy or wavy.

Eyes should be regularly tested from an optometrist if one can notice any of the following symptoms-

Difficulty in reading small letter with reading glasses also

Straight lines may appear distorted or crooked

Vision clarity may reduce from normal

Age- related macular degeneration can be detected in a routine eye exam. The doctor will conduct a complete eye examination to diagnose the condition. To diagnose dry macular, various eye tests can be recommended by doctors who include:

Test of the eye from back side

Tests to find center vision problems

Fluorescein Angiogram

Optical coherence tomography

For wet macular, there will be a procedure to capture different pictures of eye blood vessels to evaluate the current and actual situation of the eye. To evaluate the condition of eye fluorescein Angiogram is given at the time of eye test.

Treatment for AMD

At the moment there is no treatment available for dry AMD because dry AMD doesn’t involve new blood vessels growing. Researchers are still working to find a treatment for dry AMD but there is nothing available yet.

On the other side, there are number of treatments available for wet AMD. These treatments are responsible to stop the growth of new blood vessels. It means that treatments usually need to be given once the blood vessels start to grow in the eye.
